Where To Have Your Family Portrait Taken

This mini mommy & me session was set in a grassy, empty lot across from Southside Park, in downtown Sacramento. With it’s For Lease sign and adjacent shuttered nightclub, it doesn’t immediately read as an idyllic portrait setting.

I walked the area the day before, and identified this specific corner because I saw that the streams of golden light filtering through the trees just before sundown would provide an incandescent stage for the family portrait.

This sweet toddler was more interested in frolicking in the open grass than sitting still for a picture, but her exuberance, and her mother’s cheerful poise, translated into expressive, joyful pictures that genuinely reflect the sweetness of their relationship.

When it comes to choosing a location (you’ve likely heard it before, but it’s worth stating again here) light is the be-all, end-all. Just as this perfectly regular corner became extraordinary once drenched in late afternoon light, so can a gorgeous setting, with poor light, be rendered flat and lifeless.

Identifying the “right” light for pictures is subjective. Different photographers prefer radically different lighting scenarios. As a client, your task is to identify a photographer who makes the type of image you’re interested in, and then be flexible and trusting with your photographer’s choice of location and time. You can rest assured that she’s putting light first, and light is everything.
